Punisher Comics Address Cops Who Idolize Frank Castle

The Punisher has always been a kind of anti-hero in the comics, in the sense that he is basically a "good guy" but he, well, kills people. Though Marvel doesn't intend him to be, the Punisher has become some kind of icon for cops and soldiers, but a recent comic kind of addresses the issue directly and tries to urge these "fans" to be more like Captain America and not Frank Castle.

These are some pages from the recent Punisher No. 13 from Matthew Rosenberg and artist Szymon Kudranski:

The gist of it is some cops run into Frank Castle and ask him for a selfie. They then talk to him about a group of supporters who ‘believed in him' and show Frank a car with a Punisher sticker on it. Frank then rips the sticker up and tells the cops not to follow his example and that they're "not the same," urging them to be more like Captain America.

There's also this interesting bit where the cops don't take to it lightly and say Frank has started something bigger than himself. Then Frank threatens the cops that if they start doing what he does, he'll be coming for them next.

With this whole issue of police violence and school shootings, I think it's great that Marvel is getting the Punisher himself to say something to these people who glorify him as some kind of hero. Even creator Gerry Conway himself has said that Frank Castle is not someone to look up to. Let's just hope that these real-world "fans" get the message as well.

Punisher No. 13 is now available.
