Stephen King's 1986 horror novel It is getting its very own film adaptation this year and its trailer created a strong buzz online as it spread across social media sites. However, King's readers and horror film buffs are more than excited to see the horrifying clown movie drop in cinemas, it seems like a few aren't too happy with It.
Speaking with MEL Magazine, performers who're making a living as clowns are feeling upset over the film and it's trailer worrying that It would instill more fear of murderous clowns into the public consciousness.
"It's ruining our business. We just experienced a nice break from the scary clown meme from last October, and just when things are starting to normalize, the IT trailer comes and it's like, ‘Here we go again,'" Nick Kane complains.
"It's gonna be bad for clowns. It's a dying profession. And the people who do it and scrape together a living have to grapple with the fact that it's cool and hip not to like clowns. The ultimate prick in this is that it's going to turn young consumers away from an art form that's sweet and nice and not about the Kardashians and Minecraft," explains another performer, Guilford Adams.
While it certainly isn't the film's fault – people have had fear of clowns for ages – IT will certainly affect the clowning industry for a while. Given that clowns usually perform for children and that children are easily affected by the things they see, clown performers may have difficulty finding an audience to perform to.
IT is scheduled for release on September 08, 2017.
