Power Rangers Follows Beauty & the Beast with First Openly Gay Movie Superhero

Hot on the heels of the big controversy that blew up even before the live-action adaptation of Beauty & the Beast arrived in theaters, another upcoming movie is set to make some murmur somehow.

The upcoming Power Rangers will change up the background of one of the Rangers, Yellow Ranger Trini. In the new movie, she will be the first-ever openly gay protagonist in a superhero movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the scenes depict Trini as confronting her issues with her sexuality, where her boyfriend problems were actually girlfriend problems. Trini will be portrayed by Becky G in the film.

Director Dean Israelite sees this as a powerful moment for the film, as it finally translates on the big screen some of the issues that were previously skipped in recent superhero movies.

"For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That's OK.' The movie is saying, ‘That's OK,' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."

How audiences will react to this new bit of information remains to be seen. But this isn't the first time that Power Rangers has faced issues concerning the LGBT community. David Yost, who portrayed the Blue Ranger in the ‘90s TV series, was openly gay and had experienced harassment over his sexual orientation.

Power Rangers will open in theaters this week.
