Pokemon Sun and Moon Creators Talk Alola World & Pokemon Go Interaction

The entire Pokedex may already be out there for everyone to see. That doesn't mean that we already know everything that we can expect from Pokemon Sun and Moon. In fact, it seems that the creators still have a lot up their sleeves as far as surprises go.

Game Freak's Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori spoke with Game Informer and talked about what inspired the Alola World—and even gave a nice little hint about their plans for the future of the game.

Hawaii was chosen as the inspiration for the setting as a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise. According to Masuda, they went back to the basics of Pokemon and determined that it's all about life

"I wanted to focus on this idea of life and how the sun and moon are involved with creating life on this plane, and in terms of a region, that would be best representative of that… I know how good Hawaii is. It captures it all. You get all the warm sun, and it's full of life and nature and it really captures all these concepts that I wanted to go through—the sun and the moon affecting life on this planet—and also kind of how the people in Hawaii really live with nature, and I felt that would just be a kind of suitable inspiration for the region that would one day express these concepts."

Longtime fans of the Pokemon core games may know that the way to keep the games connected in a way is via the Pokemon Bank. However, the creators may be planning a new kind of crossover connectivity with other games in the franchise.

"With Pokemon Go, yeah, we definitely want to have some kind of—at some point—some kind of connectivity, some way the games can interact… I think a lot of people maybe learned about Pokemon for the first time from Pokemon Go, the core concept of throwing out a Pokeball and catching a Pokemon, so we don't want to waste that. We want to have a kind of way to connect the two, or have a way for people who enjoyed one to enjoy some of their progress in the other."

Masuda also confirmed that this is a definite plan somewhere down the road.

And for those who are still holding out to the hope of Ditto and its possible region-exclusive mechanic, Masuda also teased that they "got some ideas" about the ‘mon, but won't say more. That's something to look forward to, at least.
