Lucasfilm has been keeping details about Star Wars: The Last Jedi close to its chest, but with the sequel trilogy installment drawing closer to its December release, the studio has slowly been letting out new information on The Force Awakens sequel.
This includes new details on the relationships General Organa forms in the late Carrie Fisher's last film as Leia in the Star Wars franchise. After losing her husband and her son to the Dark Side in The Force Awakens, Leia starts to form a familial bond with Poe Dameron and according to Oscar Isaac, the ace pilot becomes some sort of surrogate son to the general.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Isaacs talks about Poe's character arc and his dynamic with Leia in the The Last Jedi.
"Poe is in some ways a surrogate son for Leia. But also I think she sees in him the potential for a truly great leader of the Resistance and beyond. Poe's arc is one of evolving from a heroic soldier to a seasoned leader, to see beyond the single-mindedness of winning the battle to the larger picture of the future of the galaxy. I think Leia knows she won't be around forever and she, with tough love, wants to push Poe to be more than the badass pilot, to temper his heroic impulses with wisdom and clarity."
Losing Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to Kylo Ren was a heartbreaking moment for Leia, and while her son still lives, it's hard to imagine how Ben turning back to the light in The Last Jedi. It's good to hear that the General will find someone to pour her time and affection as she goes through her loss in the upcoming sequel to The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15, 2017.
