Patrick Stewart, the star of Logan, says that he will apply for U.S. citizenship if that is the only way he can fight what he believes are the anti-immigrant policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The highly acclaimed British actor disclosed his plans while on a promotional appearance for the last Wolverine movie on the TV show The View. The man who has played the lead in two successful sci-fi franchises, The X-Men and Star Trek: The Next Generation, said that the first directly addressed issues like racism, bigotry, and societal discrimination.

Stewart was a renowned Shakespearean actor in the United Kingdom when he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. From 1987, the first year of the show, he lived in Hollywood until he returned to England more than a decade later. Bryan Singer then invited him to play Professor Charles Xavier, the founding father of the X-Men in the first movie of that superhero team. Stewart played Xavier from 2000 up to this year's Logan which he once said is his last appearance as mutant kind's elder statesman.
Disturbed by the events he sees breaking out in the U.S., Stewart wants to join his fellow actors in their fight but is constrained by one limitation: he is not a U.S. citizen.
He says:
"...however, maybe it's the only good thing: as a result of this election, I am now applying for citizenship. Because I want to be an American too. All of my friends in Washington said there is one thing you can do: fight, fight, oppose, oppose. But I can't do it because I'm not a citizen."
There' s no telling how long before Stewart receives his citizenship papers, but he has at least four years to make the transition, and then take on his proverbial sword. As his Enterprise-captain alter-ego would have put it, "Make it so."
Logan, directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, is currently showing in cinemas.
