Pacific Rim's disappointing box office performance meant a sequel was never a sure thing. It had a release date, then it didn't, then Guillermo del Toro dropped out as director, but was still involved with the project as producer and hired Daredevil's Steven S. DeKnight to direct. Now, the film is officially on, and production is underway in Australia.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega was cast as the film's lead, and he is playing the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentacost. Today he confirmed the rumored title of the film:
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom!
Just in case you don't know what that word means, "maelstrom" is a large, powerful, and violent whirlpool. Charlie Hunnam won't be returning in the sequel, but del Toro said that "a lot" of the film's cast will return. Newcomer Cailey Spaeny has been confirmed to return as well.
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will be released in theaters on February 23, 2018.
