While Star Wars Rebels is busy preparing for an epic showdown between a grey-haired Obi-Wan Kenobi and a crippled Maul in the dunes of Tatooine, rumors have been going around that the Star Wars cinematic universe might see Maul again in the Han Solo spinoff.
Though Lucasfilm hasn't commented on the rumors just yet, Ray Park, the Star Wars star who had played the Dathomirian sith in The Phantom Menace is expressing interest in reprising the role. In an interview with the Toronto Sun today, Park recalls how he was brought to play Maul in the film:
"It was known within the school that Mortal Kombat (Annihilation) was looking for someone who knew wushu style," he explained. ""On the fifth day, they dressed me up as Darth Maul. Nick was saying, āThis is kind of like your real audition.'"
"I just fell into the character, from the first day of rehearsal." For the prequels, Park says, Lucas wanted Jedi who were more physical than in the original trilogy. "He really wanted to show them in their prime, which worked for me. I used a lot of animal styles and martial arts styles to help me with the character.
This is what his response would be if he was asked to join the cast of Han Solo.
"I'm like, āAwright, maybe they will ask me back. My nose is still big, and my ears are still the same, and I still know how to handle a light saber."
Of course it would be great to honor the original Maul with a place in Han Solo. If not, then he could also train the newbie take on the role though, much like Harrison Ford has been doing with his successor, Alden Ehrenriech and Billy Dee Williams with Donald Glover.
