Obi-Wan Kenobi Survived Darth Vader Duel In Original Star Wars Script

Alec Guinness' memorable performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved in the Star Wars saga. It was therefore quite surprising that he was quickly killed off during his climactic fight with Darth Vader in 1977's A New Hope.

His death may have served a higher purpose, but it is heartbreaking nonetheless.

Now, after all these years, it has been revealed that Guinness' Obi-Wan should have survived Vader. Thanks to Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew, who promised to tweet pages from the original Star Wars script daily, we are treated to a sneak peek of what was supposed to happen in that sequence.

Apparently, Obi-Wan survives that fight and he is even assisted by Luke Skywalker. They even get to fight off a group of Stormtroopers in the Death Star.

Take a look at Mayhew's tweet:

I can't tell how events could have turned out in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi if Obi-Wan did survive, but it wouldn't be too hard to imagine Obi-Wan joining Luke as they find Yoda's sanctuary in Dagobah.

Obi-Wan may have aged and he might be a bit rusty already with lightsaber dueling since he hasn't had practice using the weapon while hiding, but I don't think Vader would have defeated him so easily if he had put up more of a fight. He practically let Vader kill him off in that scene.
