Nintendo Switch Will Reveal More, May Curb Investors’ Lukewarm Response

Were you among the fans who went on a frenzy following Nintendo's unveiling of its newest console, the hybrid Nintendo Switch?

If not, then you probably shared the same dose of skepticism that a lot of investors seemed to have. And even though a lot of gamers and even non-gamers alike marveled at what the Nintendo Switch brought to the table, there is a good reason for the doubt.

In a report from the New York Times, Tokyo industry analyst Serkan Toto touched on the fact that half of the Nintendo Switch's selling point is already offered by something else entirely: smartphones.

"The Wii's strengths—simplicity and affordability—turned into weaknesses once phones became the go-to game platform for casual players. Sony and Microsoft held onto their core audience of hardcore gamers—people who want big screens, hefty processing power and hyperreal graphics that phones can't provide—while Nintendo fans drifted to phone games like Angry Birds. Game developers, too, turned their backs on the Wii, creating a downward spiral."

What this suggests is that the Nintendo Switch may have tried to sidestep its current competition in the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One S by aiming for an audience that isn't all locked in by the two—casual players.

Part of this may be from the recent success of Nintendo in the smartphone platform. And considering how Nintendo's business plan had been to be more encompassing for gamers, instead of turned to the home console gamers, the idea of the Nintendo Switch was born.

That's not to say that the Nintendo Switch will be a dud. Though the current share sees a 6.6% fall since Friday in Tokyo trading, perhaps the company has something more in store. A Nintendo spokesperson did state that they have not yet shown everything to see with the Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch will be available come March 2017.
