Niantic Labs May Make Similar Pokemon Go Projects

Everyone can attest that Pokemon Go is one of the most successful endeavors in mobile history. Developer Niantic Labs knows this very well, and it may be the reason why it is looking at other projects that can use the same strategy.

Speaking in the October 2016 issue of Game Informer (via GameSpot), Niantic Labs CEO John Hanke said that the team is starting to think up of projects that can use the Niantic platform.

"That's always been our strategy to build up a platform underneath a game that can be used for other games, and frankly other experiences that may not exactly be games, but are still within that area of exercise, discovery, and social interaction… the Niantic platform is very much a part of our long-term vision and we have some projects that are in the early stages now that will be built on top of it so you can definitely expect to see that from us in the future."

Granted Pokemon Go isn't the first game that made use of their technology. Ingress was the first game that used AR and real-world mapping, the same technology that made Pokemon Go possible.

As far as competition goes, Niantic Labs is looking forward to more games using augmented reality and location mapping in their games. For Hanke, this is one way of pushing the kinds of gameplay available

For Pokemon Go, Niantic Labs has recently promised more features coming in the fall. Just recently, it has confirmed that the next update will introduce the Buddy Pokemon system to the game.
