New Theros: Beyond Death Previews Reveal Ashiok, Elspeth & Athreos

The first official previews from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set Theros Beyond Death have been revealed, giving fans a look at the new planeswalker cards ("Ashiok, Nightmare Muse" and "Elspeth, Sun's Nemesis) and the Orzhov-colored Theros god card, "Athreos, Shroud Veiled".

Gamespot revealed the new Ashiok from Theros Beyond Death, and as you can see below, the five-to-cast planeswalker can create a 2/3 blue/black creature with its +1 ability, and that token can make your opponent exile the top two cards of each opponent's library when it attacks or blocks, so it's a nice card to have in mill strategies.

It was previously revealed last month that future sets including Theros Beyond Death will have the special Showcase frames but unlike the Showcase cards in Throne of Eldraine, the ones in Theros Beyond Death won't be fairy tale-themed.

Athreos is one of the Theros gods returning in the January set, but note that not all of the gods are expected to return in Beyond Death. This card unsurprisingly confirms the return of the Devotion mechanic and the new coin counters. Just expect to see more Theros Beyond Death cards that will use these counters.

Elspeth is expected to return in this set, and now we have our first official look but fans aren't surprised since this card was one of the cards leaked back in October.

Theros Beyond Death, the 83rd Magic: The Gathering expansion, is set to release on January 24, 2020. Prerelease events will take place on January 17-19.
