New Star Wars Rebels Featurette Focuses on How Thrawn Came to Life

Disney XD's Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels introduced Grand Admiral Thrawn to many Star Wars fans, but the character was conceived in Timothy Zahn's series of Star Wars novels released decades before his debut in the show. The Season 3 Blu-ray release of Star Wars Rebels included a featurette in which the show's creators explain about Thrawn's legacy in the Star Wars universe and how he came to life on the animated series.

"Kiri Hart [Lucasfilm Story Group member] and I had played with the idea of putting Thrawn in Rebels for a while," the show's creator Dave Filoni said.

"Before I ever worked at Lucasfilm or ever imagined that I could work at Lucasfilm, I loved that trilogy, Heir to the Empire. I loved the character immediately. He was just so different."

Filoni explained to Timothy Zahn, the author of the Thrawn novels, how Lucasfilm's story group brought up the character. "There was a particular character that would always come up with us in our Story Group meetings, especially for our characters in the Empire, and that is Thrawn. We've taken him and put him into Rebels."

"I am honored and floored and excited and scared all at the same time," Zahn said.

The fourth and final season of Star Wars Rebels will premiere this Fall on Disney XD.
