New Star Wars Book Reveals How Han Wasn’t Really A Good Father

Han Solo (Harrison Ford) might have been a pretty great pilot, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the iconic Star Wars smuggler was a good father to Ben Solo (Adam Driver).

Though it seems like Han always wanted to have a healthy relationship with his son, the latest book in the Aftermath trilogy, Last Shot, reveals (via Screen Rant) just how unprepared Han was for fatherhood. Taking fans back to a time when Ben Solo was a young toddler under the care of Han and Leia, passages from the book highlight just how difficult parenting was for Han.

"Two years in and no matter what, nothing he did was right. He brought Ben a play blaster from Burundang and he was encouraging his violent side; took it away and the boy wouldn't stop crying. He tried to replace it with a build-a-space-center set and there were too many small pieces Ben could choke on. The worst part was, it wasn't like Leia was just nagging or inventing stuff to one-up Han; she was right about all of it. So he couldn't even properly resent her for it!"

Knowing Han's troubled years as a youth, it's pretty understandable how unprepared the smuggler would be when it came to parenting. It's pretty hard to be a good role model when you've never really had a good background of your own.

The novelization for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi also gave a few details about Ben's resentment towards his parents, revealing how Leia and Han were barely there for their son while they were working on rebuilding the Republic.

Though this definitely doesn't excuse Kylo Ren from cutting a knife through his father, the passages from Last Shot definitely adds texture to Kylo Ren's complex backstory, helping fans understand the estranged son of Han and Leia.

Lucasfilm's next movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, premieres May 25. The third and final film in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX, premieres on April 27.
