New Star Trek Beyond Featurette Hints at Krall’s Complexity As a Bad Guy

There’s more to him than what meets the eye. This seems to be the beat that Star Trek Beyond’s Big Bad Krall is playing at. A new featurette released by Paramount Pictures shows a few film scenes and insights from Director Justin Lin and cast members Chris Pine and Simon Pegg.

“Krall is very complex. He’s damaged, but there’s some empathy towards him. We wanted to understand why he has such beef with the Federation.”

This is how actor Idris Elba who plays the villainous role describes Krall in the new Star Trek Beyond featurette.

From what the cast has to say about his role, it’s that he has more layers than what his Enterprise-destroying (honestly, no spoilers here) and stereotypical punching seems to show in previous trailers.

Lin puts it in perspective, stating that what he wants from Krall is a bad guy who can deconstruct the Federation’s philosophy, but doing it because of a valid philosophy. I think that’s always a good attack for villains in any story, because there are only a handful who could pull off the watch-the-world-burn philosophy and run with it.

Synopsis:

After stopping off at Starbase Earhart, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for.

Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine and Captain Kirk, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Sofia Boutella, and Karl Urban.

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters July 22.
