New Magic: The Gathering Format Coming To MTG Arena This Fall

Magic: The Gathering's Standard format will rotate once again this coming fall with the release of the still-untitled set codenamed "Archery" so that means cards from the previous sets Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, Dominaria, and Core Set 2019 will be leaving out the format while new cards from the upcoming set will be Standard-legal. But Magic Arena players won't just be enjoying new cards when the rotation happens this fall. Wizards of the Coast will also be introducing a new format in the digital version of the trading card game.

Jay Parker, the new director of Magic: The Gathering Arena, has announced a new format coming to MTG Arena during the fall Standard rotation.

Parker was recently hired as the game's director after the former director, Chris Clay, stepped down. Weekly MTG introduced Parker to fans and interviewed him on the official Twitch channel of Magic: The Gathering.

Parker didn't reveal the details of the new format coming to MTG Arena but he said that there will be announcements coming during the release of Core Set 2020 next month. According to Parker, all cards in the libraries will remain and that players will still be able to use those cards after the fall Standard rotation. Many speculate the new format to be what many are calling "Standard Plus" with cards from Kaladesh, the Magic current sets, and the upcoming sets as a pool for the format.

Parker was also asked if the popular digital PC game is coming to other formats like Mac, mobile, or videogame consoles, he said that nothing is immediately in the works, and that it's just a matter of "when, not if."

Core Set 2020 is set to be released on July 12, 2019. Core Set 2020 is also coming to Magic Arena, with preorders for the set opening in the game later this week on June 13. The Core Set 2020 bundle in Arena includes a mythic rare Planeswalker card for Chandra as a bonus.
