Stormtroopers missing their shot might be a classic joke in the Star Wars franchise, but there hasn't been a really good reason why the Empire soldiers don't really know how to fire a good shot. There have been quite a number of interesting theories trying to explain the Star Wars stormtroopers terrible aim – one of the best explanations being that they were told by Imperial higher-ups not to kill Luke and his friends on the Death Star – but none of them quite properly explain all of the Star Wars movies where the troopers miss their target.
Now, according to a new theory by Nerdist, it just might be The Force. It might sound a bit too much, but the trooper was "supposed to represent the cold, devastating force of the Emperor's military forces.
Remember how there's a part of A New Hope that explains how the Force tends to have a will of its own? Chirrut's faith in the Force also got him safe in Rogue One, a pretty clear indication of the power of the Force. It's a pretty good way to explain why the main Resistance characters barely get hit by the Empire.
If that doesn't work, there's also Lucasfilm's new book. From A Certain Point of View actually explains the Imperial stormtrooper conundrum with a simple line that says "all Imperial military personnel, including stormtroopers, actually had their pay adjusted to correspond with their firing accuracy,"
We wonder if the troopers down in Star Wars: The Last Jedi don't really know how to aim either. Let's just wait and see.
