The Mortal Kombat movie is officially underway, and one of the main stars is Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Aquaman) who has been cast in the role of Earth Realm's champion Liu Kang. It may be a while before we get to see any official promotional material, but Lin has shared a video of himself doing some classic MK moves.
Check him out:
If you play Mortal Kombat, you'll know that the leg sweep is one of the many shared moves among characters, and it would be fun to see some kind of incorporation of the classic moves in the film—not just the leg sweeps, but maybe the uppercut as well. The fighting styles have greatly changed as Mortal Kombat has evolved, but it's always nice to see some callbacks to the OG Mortal Kombat.
For now, Liu Kang is only one of an impressive roster of characters, but I have a feeling that Sub-Zero is the main protagonist, seeing as Joe Taslim was the first actor to be cast in the movie. Then again, there's a lot of mystery surrounding Lewis Tan's character, as he's yet to be revealed. My guess is that he's actually playing superstar Johnny Cage, and New Line has decided to keep the casting quiet in fear of the backlash, seeing that Tan is Asian and Cage has always been white in the games.
Of course, that's just my speculation.
The Mortal Kombat movie is set for a release on March 5, 2021.
