Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is off the air, but not its namesake. SHIELD has become an official and real-world government program in both the United States and Canada.

CBC stated that the Strategic Homeland Integrated Ecosystem for Layered Defense, a.k.a SHIELD is a component of NORAD. It is an aerospace agency that provides security for the two countries. This SHIELD version focuses on monitoring possible land, air, or space-based threats for the two countries, with the use of real-time data analysis.

Marvel's version of SHIELD first came about in the Strange tales #135 cover in August 1965. Back then, SHIELD stood for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, and Law Enforcement Division.

SHIELD was integrated into the Marvel Universe, which has an international reach. In the MCU, the agency fights foreign and domestic threats, with the help of Captain America and other heroes. In 1991, the acronym was renamed to Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate.

In the MCU films, the agency was introduced in Iron Man (2008). In the film, SHIELD stood for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division.

In the real world, the SHIELD system gets data and utilizes it to a common operational picture. It employs the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis. The program scans the data it has acquired for any patterns that are not visible to the human eyes. It aims to help decision-makers to understand an adversary's' potential courses of action before the action is executed.

In layman's terms, SHIELD will use predictive analysis and pools its information using artificial intelligence. The concept's vision is to detect threats using the data from both traditional and nontraditional

Such a system "pools this data and fuses it into a common operational picture," said the paper, published last September. "Then, using the latest advances in machine learning and data analysis, it scans the data for patterns that are not visible to human eyes, helping decision-makers understand adversary potential courses of action before they are executed."

What they're talking about is the utilization of predictive analysis and artificial intelligence. The SHIELD concept envisions a "global sensing grid" that can sniff out threats as they develop by drawing on data from "traditional and nontraditional sources," such as civilian air traffic control grids.

That said, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is available for streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
