Marvel's Plan for Recasting Iron Man & Captain America

By now, Marvel has reached the phase where the most well-known of its heroes have finished their trilogy movie runs. With Captain America: Civil War released this year, we officially say goodbye to Captain America's solo movies.

Iron Man's farewell came a little earlier last 2013. Granted, we still keep seeing Robert Downey, Jr. pop up here and there--and we'll be seeing him in Spider-Man: Homecoming next.

But the topic of recasting has been touched on once in a while, and in the case of Marvel's biggest heroes, big boss Kevin Feige revealed some of the ways they may go through with it.

In an interview with Toronto Sun, Feige revealed that one way to do it would be a simple recast, which they've already done. This is in the case of Don Cheadle, who stepped in to fill the shoes of Terrence Howard as James Rhodes.

Granted that Iron Man is probably now associated with Downey, it may be hard to cast someone so easily. The same goes for Chris Evans, whose good boy charm isn't so easy to replicate as the perfect Captain America. Unless of course, his best friend Bucky takes up the shield.

Another way is to age them, as in the case of Michael Douglas's Hank Pym for Ant-Man.

"I think most of these characters that are iconic, like (James) Bond, like Batman, like Spider-Man, like Iron Man, someday will be portrayed by different actors. The good news right now is I don't have to think about that for a long time. We have storylines for this cast for many years to come."

Personally, I would prefer to see both Evans and Downey reprise their roles, though not necessarily take up their suits. This may be the case with Captain America, whose final scene in Civil War probably meant it's the end of his time bearing the burden of the shield.

Even without solo movies, there are still a couple of movies where they can have cameos, starting with 2018's Avengers: Infinity War Part I.
