Marvel's Avengers had a bit of a rough start at first, with the E3 2019 reveal being disappointing to many. The fact that it didn't show a lot of gameplay hurt a lot of people who weren't in the show, plus the character models were a bit wonky and could have used more time in the lab. Thankfully, future trailers would improve on a lot of the problems people had, including better faces for Thor and Black Widow, among others.
However, speaking with Den of Geek, Marvel's Avengers creative director Shaun Escayg feels that it was the introduction of Ms. Marvel a.k.a. Kamala Khan that turned the tide. One of the major issues fans had was with the character models not resembling what we've seen in the MCU since those images have been ingrained into our psyche, at least somewhat. Introducing Ms. Marvel changed that, helping people realize this was a new story with these characters.
"Well, we anticipated that that would be our first hurdle, right? First [we had] to get our original story out there, and educate the fans. You know, a lot of people came in, and the movies were their first introduction to the Avengers. But there's been 80 years of Marvel history, and a lot of people forget, but the first movie, there was a lot of backlash with the movie - like, 'That's not Iron Man, and that's not Thor.' So [we knew] we would face the same things."
Kamala is expected to be the lead protagonist who gets The Avengers back together after the disastrous events of A-Day. She lets the team know that this tragic "accident" was actually intentional and The Avengers must reunite to take out this new threat.
Marvel's Avengers comes out on May 15 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
