Marvel’s Avengers Developer Bets Games Success On Reputation Of Tomb Raider Reboot

Marvel fans might imagine that Marvel's Avengers videogame is guaranteed success seeing how it's based on a major, established IP, however, there Crystal Dynamics is doing its best to meet the excessively high expectations that come with developing a Marvel videogame.

It's difficult trying to create something entirely new with iconic characters like Iron-Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, and the rest of the Avengers. However, Crystal Dynamics isn't afraid of the challenge, comparing Marvel's Avengers to its Tomb Raider reboot.

Speaking in an interview with PlayStation Blog, Crystal Dynamics Studio Head Scot Amos bets the success of Marvel's Avengers on the studio's ability in taking beloved IPs like Tomb Raider and doing something new.

"We stake our reputation on it," Amos said, speaking about Marvel's Avengers, "Just like we approached Lara Croft back in 2013, we want to show the world how we do things in a new and original way."

Featuring an all-new story disconnected from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel's Avengers is a singleplayer and co-op third person "action-adventure" game with what seems to be a few role-playing elements. The game begins at A-Day were Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, and the Hulk are unveiling a high-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. The celebration turns deadly, forcing the Avengers to disband. Gamers have to do their best after the Earth's Mightiest Heroes are forced to reassemble.

Gamers can "master extraordinary abilities, customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers." They can also unlock "powerful skills and new gear to build your ideal version of Earth's Mightiest Heroes," all of this done in what Crystal Dynamics describes to be an ever-expanding world that's under constant threat.

Marvel's Avengers is set for release on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia on May 15, 2020.
