Marvel might be planning to reboot the X-Men film franchise after the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, but it looks like the studio has no intention of meddling with the Deadpool franchise.
It's been a while since Disney completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, but Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has just recently suggested that Ryan Reynold's Deadpool movies are the only ones that will survive the merger between the companies, remaining unscathed while the rest of the X-Men franchise goes through a reboot.
Speaking in an interview with Variety, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recounts what Iger told him when Disney purchased Marvel for itself, explaining why Deadpool is being left to its own devices.
"When were purchased, Bob said to us, ‘if it's not broke, don't fix it.' There's no question that Deadpool is working, so why would we change it?" Feige told the entertainment news outlet.
Before Disney's acquisition of Fox, fans were concerned that the Mickey Mouse House would make major changes to the Deadpool franchise. Ryan Reynold's Merc with a Mouth had brassy, R-rated films that wouldn't entirely fit in with Disney's roster of family-friendly movies.
Hearing these concerns, Disney has time and time again assured fans that nothing would be done to change Deadpool in any way – after all, the Merc with a Mouth's film series was enjoying major critical and commercial success.
The only question now is what Marvel has in store for Deadpool. Will Wade Wilson somehow find his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or will he be left in his little pond to play in?
Marvel's next film, Avengers: Endgame, premieres April 26, 2019.
