Marvel Shares Change in Game Development Partnerships

When it comes to the movie franchise, it's no doubt that Marvel is leading the charge with a far more superior lineup following years of movies and buildup.

However, in the game department, it's easy to see how DC Comics can lead the game, with a string of Batman movies and the much-hyped sequel Injustice 2 that brings a different brand of storytelling genius to the table.

While Marvel may look like it's playing catchup with games, Marvel Games' Jay Ong spoke to GamesIndustry.biz to share just how the process of game creation has changed within its own IPs. For starters, the goal is to find a partner company that shares the same goals.

"It's not just a creative alignment, but ambition is a huge part of it. Unless you want to hit home runs, we're not interested in partnering with you… Are you willing to invest the talent, time, and resources to create a huge game like Spider-Man, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, or The Avengers? Those are all going to be huge games with long development cycles and top-tier talent, all that."

Ong added that the way they view partnerships is more long-term, and one that is based on the success for both parties, which usually fuel the partnership even more. Marvel has also supposedly moved on from contractual basis of partnerships, which explains why exclusive projects and IPs haven't really been the studio's main priority.

It would be nice to see Marvel work out its niche in the gaming industry. While it has a few choice titles under its belt, the push for content and creative work is still very much necessary to maintain its audience and player base.
