Marvel Comics Says Legacy Relaunch Will "Break The Internet"

Marvel Entertainment is heading back to its comic book roots this fall.

On Saturday, during the Marvel: Next Big Thing panel at C2E2 comic convention in Chicago, the company has announced Marvel Legacy, a relaunch of its superhero comic book line that will refocus on its most iconic characters.

The relaunch this fall wil follow the ending of the current Secret Empire storyline --in which a corrupted Captain-America takes over the United States with Hydra -- and according to the publisher,it will see a renewed focus on "hope, wonder, enjoyment and fun."

According to Marvel, it will also see a restoration of "legacy numbering" on long-running series (an issue number that will show the overall cumulative number of issues published instead of the number in that particular volume. The relaunch will also see a new consistent cover design reminiscent of Marvel's 1980s and 1990s output.

During an interview with ABC News, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso discussed Marvel Legacy:

"[Marvel Legacy issue] functions as a preview of what's to come. It's chocked full of twists, surprises, Easter eggs, and let's just say, a last-page reveal that's probably gonna break the internet. It's a big moment, something we continually get asked about. We are going to answer that question."

Synopsis:

"The Marvel Legacy initiative is a celebration of everything that makes Marvel the best in fiction and it's a signifier of a new era for Marvel Comics," Marvel chief content officer Joe Quesada said in a statement. "It's a loving look at the heart of Marvel as we embrace our roots and move enthusiastically forward with all the Marvel characters you know and love starring in the biggest, boldest, best Marvel stories. All of which kicks off with the giant Marvel Legacy special."

The 50-page Marvel Legacy special is being written by Doctor Strange and Thor writer Jason Aaron and Secret Wars artist Esad Ribic, and it will introduce a new status quo for the comic book universe and a return of a fan-favorite character, but Marvel isn't revealing who right now. It's expected to be released this fall but no official release date has been revealed yet.
