Marvel & Disney To Stop Production In Georgia If Anti-Gay Bill Gets Passed

Disney has been a major player in the media industry for decades, capturing the hearts of viewers and influencing many with the values portrayed in all its shows and films. Now, together with Marvel, the media conglomerate has decided to use its influence against a Georgia bill that would allow the discrimination of homosexuals and other religions.

Last week, Georgia legislators passed a "religious liberty bill" that would allow faith-based organizations to "deny services or employment to those who violate their sincerely held religious belief." The bill is now pending before Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.

In light of the bill, Disney has reportedly released a statement promising to leave Georgia if Deal signs the bill. Currently, Marvel Studios owns a hub in the state.

Disney told Variety:

Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law.

Disney isn't the only organization to express its disapproval of the bill. Echoing Disney's statement,

On Monday, Vans Stevenson, The Motion Picture Association of America's senior vice president of state government affairs, said of the bill:

We are confident that Governor Deal will not allow a discriminatory bill to become law in Georgia.

Several Hollywood personalities have spoken up and taken a stand against discrimination in the industry. These include Mark Hamill speaking out on Luke's sexuality, John Boyega on the possibility of Finn and Poe Dameron romance, and J.J. Abrams saying Star Wars without gay characters is narrow-minded, among others. I'm pretty sure this bill won't be signed any time soon, if at all.

What do you think?

The current Disney/Marvel project filming at Pinewood Studios Atlanta is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Most recent film project that filmed in the state is Captain America: Civil War, which used the Georgia studio in 2015.
