Martin Scorsese Doubles Down on Marvel Comments Lamenting Young People’s Understanding of Cinema

Critically-acclaimed director Martin Scorsese caused quite a ruckus when he declared that he didn't really consider Marvel movies as cinemas earlier this month. Marvel stars like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and Natalie Portman came out to defend the Marvel Cinematic Universe while other celebrities and filmmakers like Jennifer Anniston and Francis Ford Coppola took Scorsese's side in the fight.

Now, it looks like the director of films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Silence has decided to double down on his comments against Marvel movies saying that MCU films "shouldn't become what our young people believe is cinema."

Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Rome Film Fest to help promote his upcoming film, The Irishman, Scorsese decided to explain his thoughts regarding the Marvel movies, saying that he hopes that the film industry doesn't forget to support narrative cinema even in the age of blockbuster films.

"The key that I'm hoping for is for theaters to continue to support narrative cinema of this kind," Scorsese said, praising the works of filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson, Noah Baumbach, and Wes Anderson.

According to Scorsese, his movie, The Irishman, is an exploration of "mortality and the unraveling of life." The filmmaker's main concern is that narrative films like his will be washed out by blockbuster movies.

"But right now the theaters seem to be mainly supporting the theme park, amusement park, comic book films. They're taking over the theaters," Scorsese said. "I think they can have those films; it's fine. It's just that that shouldn't become what our young people believe is cinema. It just shouldn't."

Scorsese might have a point when he says that cinemas should continue endorsing deep, narrative films, however, the filmmaker shouldn't really judge Marvel movies as harshly.

What do you think about Scorsese's new comments? Do you agree with the filmmaker? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
