Mark Hamill on Luke's Sexuality: 'If you think Luke is gay, of course he is'

The possibility of introducing gay characters in the Star Wars universe has been discussed a lot lately. Just last week, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams said that Star Wars without gay characters is "insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive". Actor John Boyega said that a romance between Finn and Poe could happen. During a recent interview with The Sun, Mark Hamill said Luke Skywalker's sexuality, as far as he's concerned, is open to interpretation.

"Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I'm bullied in school…I'm afraid to come out'. They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?' I'd say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer," the actor told The Sun. "If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves."

In adirect message to a fan on Twitter in January, Hamill addressed a question regarding Skywalker's sexuality:

Hamill is set to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
