Mark Hamill: Luke Returning in Episode IX is Entirely Up to J.J. Abrams

Though Obi-Wan may have died in A New Hope we still got to see plenty of him in Star Wars V and VI, which leads many to believe that we haven't seen the last of Luke Skywalker. Mark Hamill, who plays Luke, is still open to coming back, but admits that it's not up to him.

Talking with ABC's Clayton Sandell, Hamill was asked if he would like to come back for Episode IX to which he replies:

"Listen, if you can't have fun making a Star Wars movie, you have some serious problems. I had a blast. (So, I'll take that as a yes?)… Listen, put in a good word for me, cause it's all in J.J.'s hands."

With Carrie Fisher gone and Leia initially set to have a larger role in the sequel, Luke is pretty much the only Legacy character that could make an impactful comeback. Of course, I would have also liked to see an old Lando Calrissian, but it's been said that Lucasfilm is finding it hard to strike a deal with Billy Dee Williams to return.

For now, it seems that Abrams and Chris Terrio are already done with the script, and Star Wars Episode IX is set to start shooting sometime this summer. With Rian Johnson basically pulling the rug from under everyone with The Last Jedi, I'm hoping that Abrams and Terrio have something fun planned for the finale that will take more risks this time around.

Star Wars Episode IX comes out Dec. 20, 2019.
