Magic: The Gathering's Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Will Have A Story, Not Just A Summary

Earlier this month, when Wizards of the Coast revealed the official story summary for the new Magic: The Gathering set Theros Beyond Death, fans expressed their disappointment for the set's lack of story. Unlike many of the MTG sets released in recent years, no novels or series of short stories were released for the set despite the epic trailer featuring Elspeth's conflict with Ashiok in the underworld of Theros. Now, fans are wondering if this will be the new norm, and if the next set coming this April, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths will have the same story treatment.

Magic head designer Mark Rosewater has recently confirmed on his Blogatog that Ikoria will have a story, not just a summary. Last week, Rosewater also confirmed that the lack of story in Theros Beyond Death is not the new norm.

To many MTG fans, a Magic set's story is an essential part of the card game's experience. The story details add flavor, themes to the cards, fluourishing the imagination of players as they cast their spells and summon creatures, so I'm glad that they're bringing more story in Ikoria, not just a quick summary.

Although Wizards hasn't revealed any story details about Ikoria, we do know that the plane is described as a world of monsters. We recently got our first look at Ikoria, and some details about the set have been revealed, but no story yet.

What do you think the story of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths will entail?

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths will officially be released on April 24, 2020. Prerelease events will take place from April 17-19.
