Magic: The Gathering Non-Core Sets Going Back to Featuring 3 Planeswalkers Each

The recent Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark introduced 36 new Planeswalker cards (not including the Buy-a-Box one) so it's easy to see why some players think that the game's Standard format is currently oversaturated with them in terms of sheer volume but don't worry. Future Magic sets won't be like War of the Spark.

When an MTG fan asked Magic lead designer Mark Rosewater if future Magic sets are expected to cut back on Planeswalker cards, he confirmed that non-core sets will have three Planeswalker cards each.

"War of the Spark is not the norm," Rosewater wrote on his Blogatog. "You'll see planeswalkers back to three in non-core Standard-legal sets."

War of the Spark was a rare kind of Magic set that featured an insane amount of Planeswalker cards and with the epic storyline against Nicol Bolas and the God-Eternals of Amonkhet, it was a well-designed set. The current Standard format may seem oversaturated by Planeswalker cards but I thought they did a fantastic job balancing out their power levels so not all of them are viable and versatile in the format. You can't just jam more than 20 different kinds of Planeswalker cards in a deck and make it work in a competitive tournament. Only some planeswalkers fit in a particular build. I'm still hoping that they will someday release another set like War of the Spark but it's good to know that they will be back to limiting each non-Core set to only 3 per set.
