Remember last month's rumor about a Magic: The Gathering MMORPG in the works? Well, it turns out that's true, and Wizards of the Coast, the company behind the fantasy trading card game franchise, has officially announced it.

Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment, two companies known for having a lot of experience creating online worlds, are making a Magic: The Gathering massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG or MMO). The new project is considered a "AAA MMO" being developed from the ground up for both consoles and PC.

The best trading card game in the world has over 20 million players in 70 countries and 11 languages around the world. The game will "allow fans of the game to fully immerse themselves in the Multiverse, the rich fantasy world in which Magic: The Gathering takes place".

"This game is an exciting part of Wizards of the Coast's Magic Digital Next initiative to extend gameplay beyond the tabletop, and we're proud to work with the talented team at Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios to bring the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to life," said David Schwartz, Wizards of the Coast Vice President of Digital Publishing.

"Everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game," CEO of Cryptic Studios, Stephen D'Angelo said. "We're thrilled to provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game's worlds and characters through an entirely new lens. Get ready to embark on a brand new journey."
