Magic The Gathering Head Designer Wants Squirrels To Get Back Into Black Border

Squirrels in the Magic: The Gathering multi-verse are usually represented in silver-bordered cards from Unhinged, Unglued, and Unstable, which are not meant for any sanctioned tournament play, but did you know that there's a time in Magic history when squirrels were actually featured in black-bordered cards that were legal in Standard or Extended formats back then? Just check out these examples from the '90s MTG sets:

Sadly, these days, you won't see squirrels in Standard-legal MTG expansions released in recent years. However, MTG head designer Mark Rosewater wants them to be taken seriously again, and see them back to their black-bordered card frames, and he recently told a fan on Twitter that he hasn't given up: "I've been trying for years to get them back into black border," Rosewater said on Twitter. "I haven't given up."

Rosewater went on to retweet a post about how there were propagandas back that declared war on squirrels in 1918, Califronia.

Squirrels may seem like a silly creature type in a multi-verse full of dragons, zombies, fairies, and knights, but it would be interesting to see them featured in black-bordered MTG cards again. We'll probably see more silver-bordered squirrels in the upcoming Unsanctioned product.
