Magic: The Gathering Designer Says Cosmos Elixir Effect Could Be Monowhite

The official preview season for Kaldheim is almost over, and some powerful Magic: The Gathering cards from the Norse mythology-inspired set are already getting Commander players hyped. One of those cards is called Cosmos Elixir, a four-to-cast artifact that lets you draw a card at the beginning of your end step if your life total is greater than your starting life total. Otherwise, you gain 2 life.

Magic head designer Mark Rosewater recently responded to a fan's question on his Blogatog, and said that the card's effect may be printed on a monowhite card.

"There's an alternate reality where we made it white where someone's writing in asking why it couldn't have been an artifact, so other colors could have used it," Rosewater said. "By the way, while it doesn't have a white mana symbol in its mana cost, it is a tool easiest used by white. For what it is worth, I do think in the future this effect can be printed on a monowhite card."

Since white is mostly the color associated with lifegain, it's easy to see why Cosmos Elixir's effect can be seen on a monowhite card. Black has Phyrexian Arena as a draw engine enchantment, so seeing a monowhite permanent get Cosmos Elxiir's effect would be a great card to have for a color many deemed as underpowered.

Kaldheim is set to release on February 5, 2021 for tabletop, and Jan. 28 on Magic Arena and Magic Online. The set will be followed by Strixhaven: School of Mages, which is set to release sometime in Spring 2021.
