Magic: The Gathering Arena is Planning To Add Another Popular Format

Magic: The Gathering Arena is officially launching later this week with the release of Throne of Eldraine on the free-to-play game, and although Arena still doesn't feature eternal fan-favorite formats like Modern, Legacy, and Commander, Wizards of the Coast has plans to bring another popular format to the game.

During the first ever State of the Game video released last Friday, Magic Arena game director Jay Parker and Community Director Megan O'Malley talked about what Wizards of the Coast and the developers are planning for Magic Arena's future, and they revealed that they are planning to add Cube Draft, a format in which a player or playgroup builds their own unique "cube", a draft pool of 360 or more MTG cards from anywhere the builder chooses from the history of Magic, and the players use the cube to play a limited format such as booster draft.

While it's great that Wizards and the MTG Arena developers are planning to add Cube Draft to the game, don't expect it to be added anytime soon since the format is still in the conceptualization phase right now. That means that they haven't developed much of it and that the developers may not end up working on it if the idea presents presents too many developmental challenges or if they decide to focus on developing another feature or adding a different format on Arena. Compared to tabletop Magic and Magic Online, Magic Arena has a smaller card pool for Cube so it would probably be more ideal to add more cards from older sets first before adding this format in the game.

It's exciting to hear that they are planning to add Cube Draft to Arena but don't get your hopes up. For now, we should be more grateful that they will be introducing Brawl and Historic formats on Arena this year.

Earlier this month, Wizards gave fans a preview of the Brawl Throne of Eldraine decks in a special event. You can watch me play it below:

Throne of Eldraine, the 82nd Magic expansion, is set to release on October 4. Prerelease events will take place on September 27 to 29. It wil be released on Magic Arena on September 26, and will have a Limited (Sealed) event to kick off its launch.
