Lucy Lawless on Her Potential Return To Xena

Back in August, we learned that NBC has confirmed a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot, and there's been talk that the original star Lucy Lawless would be a part of it, but NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said that they're not sure how she can be involved in the reboot since her iconic character died in the original series. They also don't want her presence to overshadow the direction they want to take with it.

During a recent interview with Comicbookresources, the 47-year-old New Zealand actress said that she would be open to return, if the show is faithful to the original. She said:

"Too early to say because if they don't honour the original, you know the covenant with the fans, then I wouldn't touch it with a forty-foot flagpole. Too early to say. Their concern is that I would overshadow whoever was playing [the lead role], which may or may not be legit, but do I want to be used as some sort of warm prop for somebody else's show. What's in it for me?"

If they ever decide to bring Lawless back in the show, they'd have to bend the story in a way that her character will return. Maybe put a fantasy twist to it or introduce a clone. I just don't see how they are planning to approach it. I just hope that including her won't appear forced. She added:

"And if it wasn't honouring the intention of the show - like it's full of T&A, that immediately breaks the covenant with fans - that is not part of female empowerment, that is not part of self-realisation, it's not part of, you know, good over base instincts or everything that the show was about then yeah, I would not want to have a part of it."

Her character depicted female empowerment well, and I could see her point about staying true to the spirit of the original. She hopes that the series will be enjoyable:

Gabrielle, it's not done, we still need everything that was about, so I totally support them in making it. But how that is realized is a much bigger question. I hope it's great. I hope that the fans have that again. The TV series aside, what I would love to do is a little bit likeAsh Vs. Evil Deadwhere you get the original cast together - get Renee O'Connor, me, Bruce and Ted Raimi - and do a spoof, do a comedy one-off movie. That would be so fun."

That sounds like a fun idea, and I hope it happens. Whether or not Lawless is involved in the reboot, I hope it will feature a badass lead. I don't think Xena will be the same without Lawless. She is Xena!

So would you like to see Lawless in the Xena reboot?
