Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Trailer Brings the Classic Cyberpunk Anime to Life

Paramount Pictures just released the first trailer for the live-action Ghost in the Shell film starring Scarlet Johansson. The anime-manga inspired film sees The Major (Johansson), a cyborg policewoman and her task force Section 9. They will face a relentless enemy who plans to sabotage Hanka Robotic's artificial intelligence technology. Set aside the white-washing casting controversy, the trailer shows how close the film is to its source material, giving us a glimpse of The Major's stylish dive scene. The trailer is filled with Japanese imagery: the deadly robot geisha, the katakana signs, and neon kanji. The film looks visually awesome, and I like how this trailer hints a possible plot twist to The Major's story. Watch the trailer below:

The film is directed by Rupert Sanders.

Ghost in the Shell will be released in theaters on March 31.
