Leonardo DiCaprio Is Warner Bros. Top Choice To Play Joker In An Origin Movie

Right after the success of Wonder Woman, Warner Bros is pulling some unexpected moves by announcing that they're making a Joker Origin movie. Martin Scorsese is in talks to produce the movie, and news has it that WB is eyeing Leonardo DiCaprio to play the lead.

According to THR, WB wants an A-lister to be in the center of the movie, and they are courting Scorsese for the job primarily because of his connection with DiCaprio. Under Scorsese's wing, DiCaprio has gotten two Oscar nominations, so another collaboration between the two would be favorable.

As for the director's chair, it's said to be filled by Todd Phillips, who is better known for his work on comedy like The Hangover or Old School. The Joker movie, however, is said to be a gritty and realistic crime drama, so we'll just have to see how Phillips plans to pull this one off. I'm guessing if a comedy guy like Adam McKay can make something like The Big Short, Phillips pretty much has this in the bag.

This origin movie is said to take place in a completely different timeline from the DCEU, and Jared Leto's Joker is still going to be appearing in Suicide Squad 2 as well as a spinoff Harley Quinn and Joker movie.

I admit, this move is a bit confusing for WB who is said to be trying to replicate their success with the Nolan Batman trilogy, but with Marvel pretty much dominating the box office, I'm guessing DC is wanting to shake things up with something new.

No official release date has been set for the Joker movie.
