Legend of Zelda Games Will Be Open-World From Now On

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been met with stellar reviews since its release, and it could very well end up as game of the year for 2017. With the open-world format proving to have positive feedback from the community, Nintendo is apparently deciding to make future Zelda games open-world moving forward.

In an interview with Famitsu (via GoNintendo), Nintendo's Eiji Aonuma confirmed that future games in the series will be open-world. The interview goes:

Famitsu: Making the next Zelda game might be more difficult if you choose to make it an open-air game. What will evolve open-air? How will you make future dungeons? What will the next Zelda title be like?

Aonuma: I think that, in the future, open air games will be the standard for Zelda.

Granted the Legend of Zelda games have always had the theme of exploration, having future games be open-world would be the practical way for Nintendo to go.

As of now, fans are happy with Nintendo trying out new things. Initially, the company would always keep to itself by dishing out consoles with only Nintendo making the games. Now Nintendo is more open to third-party games, and they've even started developing mobile app games as well.

Personally, I'm not that much fond of an open-world game since I like to focus on narrative. I just find that I lose myself with all the sidequests, then I get too tired just trudging around for hours. Then again, that's just me. Open-world all you like, I'm not complaining.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available in stores now, and a DLC called Cave of Trials is expected to be released in the summer.
