It looks like Riot Games will be digging deep into its pockets due to a gender-discrimination lawsuit. The publisher of League of Legends has just been confirmed to pay a $10 million settlement in the class-action lawsuit.
Although the lawsuit was settled back in August, new details have just been unveiled. A spokesperson from Riot Games released a statement to The Los Angeles Times regarding the settlement.
"We're pleased to have a proposed settlement to fully resolve the class action lawsuit. The settlement is another important step forward, and demonstrates our commitment to living up to our values and to making Riot an inclusive environment for the industry's best talent," the spokesperson said.
According to the report, the $10 million will be paid to all female employees who have worked for Riot Games between November 2014 and the time of settlement. This means that almost 1,000 female-identifying employees will be eligible to receive part of the money.
The lawsuit was filed back in November 2018 by two female employees, one of which no longer works for Riot Games. They sued the publisher for "endemic gender-based discrimination and fostering a 'men-first' environment." Additionally, the employees claimed that Riot created a "sexually-hostile working environment," and was violating California's Equal Pay Act.
Not surprisingly, the Riot Games employees banded together in an effort to put a stop to gender discrimination. In May 2019, they staged a walkout in protest of Forced Arbitration. This prevents employees from filing a lawsuit in the event of a dispute.
Riot Games' $10 million settlement will be one of the largest payouts in California history for gender discrimination charges.
