With the underwhelming performance of Prometheus critically and commercially, Ridley Scott is looking to revamp the franchise and restore it to its natural horrifying glory with Alien: Covenant. Well, there's new information placing Katherine Waterston's in a much larger role, and link, to the original Alien than most have previously thought.

Now why is this important? It could spell doom or success for the movie.

The info: According to The Playlist, Katherine Waterston will play the main character in Alien: Covenant – the mother of the original movie's heroine Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver.

There's no telling whether this report is true, but it isn't entirely surprising if she's indeed the lead character in the movie, since strong female leads have been common in the franchise. If this is true, then it would change how we see Ellen Ripley and the original movie. It would make her adventures destined rather than the choice of a random woman to fight to survive.

In any case, teases from the cast and the set photos of the movie looks promising. Back in April, Sigourney Weaver described the sequel as "very satisfying."Michael Fassbender also teased chestburster scenes in the "Hard R" movie, with every Xenoporph version being included. Last month, a set of leaked set photos showcased some disturbing alien genocide scenegoing on.

From the looks of it, Scott is hard at work at bringing the franchise back to its former horror glory, and we couldn't ask for anything better. We're simply hoping for the best.

Alien: Covenant hits theaters on August 4, 2017.
