Karl Urban Confirms Hollywood's Worst-Kept Secret About Dredd

Dredd is considered to be one of the most underrated comic book films ever made, officially reaching cult classic status with those that have seen it. It was bloody, fun, and self-contained, with arguably the best use of slow motion in film. However, even though Pete Travis is credited as the film's director, reports released prior to the film stated that Alex Garland of Ex Machina fame was the one who directed the cult classic.

Karl Urban, the lead actor of Dredd, has confirmed that Garland was the actual director of the film, in addition to being the screenwriter for the adaptation.

Speaking with JoBlo about his iconic performance and the possibility of coming back as the character, particularly in Netflix's upcomingMega-City One series, he outright stated that it was Garland who directed the film.

"Well, I can. I mean, I could see other actors portraying him and one day that is an inevitability. I would love to have the opportunity to play DREDD again, but if it doesn't happen then I'm happy with the fact that we've made a film that has become a cult classic and that people have discovered over time. A huge part of the success of DREDD is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don't realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie."

The Thor: Ragnarok star liked working with Garland so much that he expressed a willingness to be in a sequel directed by him. Considering how good the director has been in recent years, with both Ex Machina and Annihilation getting critical praise, one can only imagine what he would do with a Dredd sequel.
