Karen Gillan On Jumanji Passing Guardians of the Galaxy At The Global Box Office

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle outperformed box office expectations this year, turning into Sony's second highest-grossing release at the domestic box office with its $393.13 haul. The film which is just $10 million away from outperforming 2002's Spider-Man at the domestic box office has also topped Guardians of the Galaxy's $773.3 million haul and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's $863.75 million earnings at the global box office with its current $930 million total.

Speaking in an interview with Screen Rant,Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle actress Karen Gillan says that it's incredible seeing the film's level of success despite going against Disney's tentpole, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"I think we all had confidence in it, but it was still a ballsy move to release up against Star Wars because that's just, yeah, that's like a crazy thing to do, I think. We all felt like it was a really strong film, but I don't think any of us anticipated quite this level of success. I mean, it's turned into a bit of a phenomenon. I mean, we're all just jumping up and down, we're celebrating. It's incredible and so exciting that people are enjoying it."

Analysts didn't really expect much from the Jumanji reboot sequel, especially after Sony decided to release the film around the same time as Lucasfilm's most recent installment. Jumanji has certainly been nothing but a pleasant surprise for the studio.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is currently screening in cinemas.
