News for the Jumanji sequel comes out from time to time, but we just got a load of information about the movie thanks to CinemaCon 2017. Now we know that the full title for the movie is Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and we also got some new details about the overall plot.
According to The Wrap, instead of a boardgame, the new Jumanji will be focusing on a magical 90s type video game console that transports four delinquent teens into the jungle. From that point on, the teens will take the form of avatars played by Dwayne Johnson (Dr. Smolder Bravestone), Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse), Jack Black (Pro. Shelly Oberon), and Kevin Hart (Moose Finbar).
Nick Jonas is also said to be in a role that will serve as the guide for the kids while they're playing the game. Since this is a sequel, there is also news that this movie will talk about Alan Parrish, Robin Williams' character from the original 1995 movie.
I think the filmmakers were going for a more millennial route by making Jumanji about a video game instead of the classic board game. Then again, there are tons of people who still play board games, but it looks like video games do penetrate a wider market.
Hopefully this sequel does right by the original. Though the first movie is kind of silly when you watch it again, I still appreciate the mature tones that are peppered into the story, like Alan coming to terms with the death of his entire family, and Bonnie Hunt's Sarah growing up to be a recluse fortune teller after her incident — I felt that was too tragic to put into a kids movie.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is set for a release Dec. 22.
