Joss Whedon Was Heartbroken Over Leaving Batgirl

Joss Whedon is considered by many to be a geek god, thanks to his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and The Avengers. Unfortunately, he hasn't always had a stellar track record and Justice League is definitely a film Whedon should be proud of, though it's not awful or his fault. Still, fans were looking forward to his Batgirl film, hence the surprise when he was let go from the project.

Whedon himself took the blame for it, claiming that he couldn't come up with a solid story for the character. However, he is a big fan of Barbara Gordon, so it's no surprise to know that he's sad about not being able to direct the Batgirl movie.

During a video interview with Variety on the premiere of Infinity War, Whedon continues taking the blame for his exit, saying that he couldn't come up with a proper story for the character. While he did have ideas, the Buffy creator claims that it wouldn't have worked in the given time needed.

"There were elements I hadn't mastered and after a long time felt like I wasn't going to. So, I told people I didn't have an idea, which isn't the exact truth. I had an idea that didn't fit in the space that was left for it. It was a little heartbreaking because I was so excited about it."

Things seem to be going fine now, with Batgirl now finding a writer and The Bird of Prey now being a priority for Warner Bros. Still, it's hard not to wonder how a Whedon Batgirl film would have panned out.

Batgirl has no release date yet.
