Joel Will Still have a Central Role in The Last of Us Part 2

Seeing that Ellie has been the center of all the promotional material, a lot of people think that Joel has died in The Last of Us Part II. Despite Joel leaving center stage, voice actor Troy Baker has confirmed that he'll still be an important part of the sequel.

Talking to Fandom, Baker explains that Joel will still play ‘a central role.' He explains:

"What we've done such a good job of doing [in The Last of Us Part II], is to continue to peel back layers and learn more about him – I even learned more about Joel and I'm the guy that walked into [the Last of Us audition] and said ‘I know the truth about Joel!'. I knew his truth back then, but [after The Last of Us Part II], I know even more of [Joel's] truth. "

I'm very curious to see what kind of ‘truth' we're going to find out about Joel in this sequel. We know that he had to lie to Ellie by the end of the first game, but we know all of the ‘truth' behind that move. My guess is that this could have something to do with Joel's life between the outbreak and the events of the first game; maybe we can find out more about his fallout with Tommy.

Then again, since there's a five-year time jump between the sequel and the first game, maybe Joel does something unspeakable that he ends up disconnecting from Ellie eventually. At this point, my guess is as good as anyone's.

While The Last of Us Part II has no definite release date, everyone is hoping it comes out sometime in 2020.
