There might be more than sixty Marvel superheroes in next year's Avengers: Infinity War but it looks like Brie Larson's Captain Marvel won't be part of the roster.

Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo spoke with Comicbook during a Marvel Studios press event after the film's panel at the San Diego Comic Con last weekend, and during the interview the filmmaker let spill that Carol Danvers won't be appearing in the third Avengers movie.

"She's not in Avengers 3," the director revealed without hesitation.

Though fans might be disappointed to hear that Captain Marvel would be absent from the first film in the two-part Avengers mash-up, there's still a possibility that the superheroine could make an appearance in the Untitled Avengers 4 – after all, the Russo brother's didn't rule her out entirely.

After dropping the new Avengers: Infinity War footage during the SDCC panel last weekend, Joe also went on to comment on the upcoming Avengers 4 production, saying that he was eager to start working on the next chapter of the two-part Avengers movie.

"They're all big," Russo told the publication. "I think it's important for both [Avengers 3 and Avengers 4] to be distinctly different. It's important for the m to have different tones, different narratives, and to have different surprises for the audience. We've worked really hard with Markus and McFeely in ensuring that the films are tonally different and structurally different."

This is interesting news for fans. Being the second part of the next chapter in the Avengers saga, one would expect Avengers 4 to have the same tone as Avengers: Infinity War (it is a follow-up after all) but it seems like the Russo brothers want some variety.

Avengers: Infinity War premieres on May 4, 2018. The Untitled Avengers 4 on the other hand hits cinemas May 3, 2019.
