On the latest episode of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda helped him write music for the new cantina scene in the movie. Miranda is the composer and creative mastermind behind Broadway's Hamilton. Abrams went to see Hamilton with his son, and Miranda approached him during the intermission, jokingly saying that "If you need music for the cantina, I'll write it." That offer actually worked out, because Star Wars composer John Williams already mentioned to Abrams that he didn't want to compose the cantina scene.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is a brilliant composer, so I'm excited what he and J.J. Abrams have come up with for the cantina scene. I'm sure that Abrams has a purpose for such a scene, though it will deliver undeniable fan service as well.
The entirety of The Force Awakens is sure to have an amazing score, as John Williams has once again stepped in to produce the majority of the music. This is just one of the many ways that The Force Awakens is staying true to the stylistic roots of the franchise, and I can't wait to see how it all comes together on December 18.
