Jessica Chastain is playing a mysterious character in Simon Kinberg's X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and although we still don't know who she's actually playing, now we know her name. Or at least, what she goes by. According to 20th Century Fox, Chastain's character is called "Smith". Since she's a shapeshifter, she's probably just using an alias to conceal her true identity.
Some fans are speculating that she could be playing a gender-swapped version of Mastermind, an original member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the comics. At one point, he used his mind control and illusion powers to manipulate Jean Grey, which led to the rise of the Dark Phoenix and Jean's loss of control.
Considering that Chastain is playing a shapeshifter, some fans think that she is playing a Skrull. The Skrull are a shapeshifting race who control a huge part of the Marvel Universe's cosmic empire.
Some fans believe that Chastain's character is Lilandra, the lover of Charles Xavier and Majestrix of the Shi'ar Empire. Although the Shi'ar play a vital role in the Dark Phoenix storyline, Chastain has denied the rumors.
Directed by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set 10 years after X-Men: Apocalypse. After a space rescue mission goes awry, a solar flare awakens Jean Grey's dark inner force, the Phoenix. Dark Phoenix promises to be the most somber entry in the series.
