Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still a month or so away from its big premiere, yet everyone seems to be eager to know director James Gunn's plans for the third installment in the space superhero film series.
In an interview with Fandango, the Marvel director was asked about what he has in mind for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and this is Gunn's response.
"People are obsessed about the third one and they haven't even seen the second one yet!" Gunn said. "What if they all hate the second one? Then they're not going to be so obsessed anymore."
"It's all about what's in the future; it's never about what we have right now. I think if anything, this Guardians is about what they are in this moment – and I think that's what it's been like for me working on the movie. It really isn't about thinking down the road and how can we make something great someday – it's how can we make something great right now in this moment that will affect people's lives for the better. That's what Vol. 2 is."
There's a bit of irritation in Gunn's answer and the director's insistence on focusing on the present seems to contradict his enthusiastic Guardians of the Galaxy 3 confirmation earlier this month. When given a point-blank question on whether he's going to direct the third installment, the director answered with:
"Listen, we're figuring it all out. We'll know soon. Let me take a couple of breaths before I say what I'm going to do next."
Does this mean Marvel's considering someone else for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's director? It's hard to imagine Gunn not wanting to helm the third Guardians installment – after all, the space-thugs-turned-heroes film series has always been his. Let's wait and see how things play out.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits cinemas on May 5, 2017.
